SXSW Austin Food Guide

BY : JASON STEWART

Don't go hungry in Texas!

As SXSW kicks off we’ve enlisted Austin veteran eater Darin Bresnitz from the Snacky Tunes Podcast to share some of his favorite food spots in town. If you’re in LA instead of Austin though, make sure to check their live podcast event March 13th at The El Rey Theater featuring a big ol’ plate of food from Wexler’s Deli, maybe the best place in town to get some smoked fish and other Jewish deli treats, live music from NIIA, DJ sets, and live podcasts…

More info and tickets can be found here.

Everythings bigger in Texas

so pace thyself...

Polvos – Go the Migas, get them with cheese and flour tortillas.  My favorite dish in the world. Get it with a Michelada.

Veracruz All Natural: Sure it’s a trailer on the side of the road, but what a trailer!  One of the best taco joints to pop up in the last few years.

La Barbecue: It’s that new-new that everyone is talking about.  Have yet to go, but those who know, say it’s the dankness.

Micklethwait: Again, another newcomer that I have yet to hit, but will scratch that smoky itch.

Barley Swine: A tasting menu featuring fresh baked bread and local Austin ingredients.  Always reinventing itself.

Dai Due:  This one is a must. It’s half butcher shop / half restaurant with two wood fire / grate cooking set ups.  Reservations strongly recommended, but they do have a bar you can sit at.

Bonhomie: An American Diner that has French influences.  Ex-pastry chef from Uchi and Uchi-Ko. A lot of fun.

Whistler / Thai-Kun: This is a fantastic cocktail bar that has the best Thai food restaurant / trailer tucked in the back.  Get after it.

East Side King: The food truck run by the people who run Qui.  Casual and delicious.

Shoal Creek Saloon:  It’s a dive, sports, New Orleans themed bar but if you love crawfish and they are in season, get over there for a bucket of beer and a few pounds of mudbugs.
