To invest in the emotional energies we project towards love, intimacy, and heartbreaks can bring the human mind into the brightest and darkest of environments. The way an artist can transmute these feelings and craft them into a piece of beauty can be seen as creating an alternate entity within itself.  

Blessed and bred in the City of Angels, singer/songwriter, Valentina, confronts these emotions; translated through soulful hooks and ethereal melodies especially in her new song and video for P.D.A. Her music spans across the spectrum of these feelings, and her lyrics portray delicate, honest ballads we are sometimes afraid to talk about.

Where are you from?

Born and raised in LA. Basically a Hollywood kid.

When did you start making music?

I’ve been singing since I could talk. My dad raised me on bossanova and jazz so I started singing in the jazz band in my school in 4th grade. At 15 I began guitar lessons and started writing songs. About a year ago Mike Posner had a scholarship program called Amor Fati where I was taught how to produce on Ableton and it really did change my life.  

What inspired you to write you new single PDA?

I was dating a boy who made me very nervous. There was an extremely slow transition into feeling comfortable with him and when I finally did I wrote this song. It’s about the euphoric feeling and the weight off your chest when you finally feel safe and happy with someone. As if you would do anything and go anywhere with them.

How did the video concept come about?

My sister Marcella (phatmango.com) did everything! All I contributed was that I wanted to dance and be super sparkly and pink. She does all my videos (produces, edits and directs) so I trust her 100%. She took that and ran with it going full on feminine, glowey, and sparkly. All my friends helped out to build the set, dance, film, and take pictures. It was such a dream!

What are some of your musical inspirations? Can be past or present.

Amy Winehouse, Ella Fitzgerald, Billy Holiday and Nina Simone have been my biggest day one inspirations. Today I am inspired by Jessie Reyez, Billie Eilish, Kanye, Sia, Rex Orange County.

What goals do you have for 2019?

I want to put out my first EP and go on my first tour. I want to have a strong voice in the world. I want to be extremely honest in my songs and continue to hone in on my sound. I want to become a great producer and teach other women how to produce.
