An elemental experimentation of color and shape...

In 1997, French Director Luc Besson, debuted his sci-fi opus that would later become an oozing cult classic- The Fifth Element. At the time of release, the film was the most expensive non-US movie produced with impressive sets nodding to futuristic mayhem and apocalyptic pandemonium circa 2200s. Equally impressive to the immaculate set design, the costume design, led by legendary French designer, Jean Paul Gaultier was transcendent of it’s time. Besson appointed Gaultier saying, “He knows the color, he knows the flavor of New York.”

Almost 21 years later the film’s wardrobe withstands the tests of time. Celebrating Gaultier’s use of saturated color and pristine silhouettes; from Ruby Rhod’s leopard print bodysuit to LeeLo’s bandage dress, photographer Dana Boulos takes us on a trip back to the 23rd century.
