Amit Greenburg likes to doodle. In fact, he’s an expert doodler. He’s so good at doodling that the ultra-exclusive Hollywood Roosevelt hotel and the global Swedish chain, IKEA, have commissioned him to draw on their stuff. At the Roosevelt, Amit was tapped to put his playful touch on pop-up restaurant, The Rosy Oyster. His now sold out poster for IKEA was apart of a limited edition run via IKEA Art Event 2017 and Colette for his solo show, “This Happy Thought.” While Amit has been known to create with all mediums—including photography, collage, and freehand drawing—he is best known for immersing viewers into an alternate universe where people are bare-naked cartoons with zero inhibitions.
WestwoodWestwood was lucky to speak to Amit about how he achieved his success without sacrificing his vision:
When did you gain your desire to become an artist?
The desire to create was always there. Being defined as an artist and designer was more of an external thing once I showed my work publicly.
How did you break into the art world? Was it by chance or did it involve a lot of hustle?
It happened organically. I feel very lucky to have the people that were around me – individuals who believed in my vision, my work.
Was there a moment you can remember when you thought, “I made it” during your career? Can you describe that moment?
I think that moment comes and goes a lot. Every new project has its excitement, but the “I made it” thought fades away quickly… ‘till the next project comes around. My “I made it” moments happen mostly during the production phase while creating for a show or a project,.It’s about the moments when you start seeing the work as a whole.
Can you describe your art?
Pop Surrealism. An open door to your subconscious mind.
What sort of feelings would you like to evoke for those who gaze at your art?
A childish curiosity.
