Designer’s finest at Salone del Mobile

BY : OLIVIA LOPEZ

design porn!

Salone del Mobile, a week-long takeover in Milan, Italy showcases the upper echelon of the design world.  Nearly 2,000 exhibitors arriving from over 150 countries descend on the cobble stone streets of Italy’s fashion capital to gawk at what’s emerging in interiors and installation worldwide. It is one of the largest events in Milan – stumping fashion week in both crowd and attendance.

For six days the city becomes a live gallery space as range of venues like shop fronts, palazzos, and former factories transform into exhibition spaces celebrating intelligent design in art and interiors.

COS celebrated its seventh year at Salone del Mobile with Southern California based artist Phillip K. Smith, whose mission was to create a light-based sculptural installation inspired by Italian Renaissance and the Milano skies.

Hermès Maison display

Hermès

Hermès Maison launches in Milan’s La Permanente Museum, converting the space into mini-village of glossy tiled pavilions highlighting the French luxury fashion house’s new objects on display. The rich, vivid color story set against mood lighting and Moroccan tiles illuminated Hermès leather intricate craftsmanship and rich heritage.

Robert Stadler's Typecasting

Vitra : 'Typecasting'

Vitra, a leader in modern design and iconic furniture, commissioned Paris-based designer Robert Stadler to curate an installation for the brand resulting in Typecasting: An Assembly of Iconic, Forgotten and New Vitra Characters.

The designer converted a sports arena into a gallery space, inviting the viewer to ascend a set of bleachers that optimized the viewing range of Vitra’s collection. Round, sculptural forms and furnishings were prominently displayed against a bright neon green backdrop in anthropological grouping, allowing the viewer to move through the evolution and history of the brand in one perspective.

Opulence at the Palazzo

Hay Design x WeWork x SONOS at Palazzo Clerici

One of the most delightful immersive experiences during the city-wide fair happened to occur in Palazzo Clerici, a former palace fully furnished by Hay Design in collaboration with WeWork and SONOS. Each room was reimagined with classic, Milanese touches and a modern flair.

Alcova Popolo Uniti

Alcova, a platform for multidisciplinary design unveils FuoriSalone in NoLo, a neighborhood North of Loreta housed inside a former Milanese panettone factory.

The exhibition space houses 27 installations from a myriad of architects, makers, designers and gallery owners whose experimentation delves in deliberately low budget and contemporary living, a concept that goes beyond the design bubble at Milan Design Week.
