Documentaries That Will Change You

WORDS BY: ARIELA KOZIN | FEATURED + LEAD IMAGE COURTESY OF BEARCAST

Some of the most popular documentaries of our time are Black Fish, Supersize Me, and Bowling For Columbine. If you haven’t seen any of the three above, read no further and let the flicks’ genius pour over you. If you have seen them, you know that there is little the trio have in common in terms of subject matter. What they do share is that they force us to get a bit uncomfortable, to recognize what is so easy to ignore, and to reevaluate our ways of living.

There is power in art. There is power in storytelling. Here are five more films that will surely change your way of thinking:

The Imposter

Get ready to question our very idea of human nature and what exactly a man is capable of. The Imposter tells the gripping story of a teen boy in Spain who claims he is the Texan child gone missing three years prior. This is true crime as its most thought-provoking.

A Film Unfinished

A Film Unfinished reflects on heart wrenching world history in hopes that we so that we will keeping questioning our teachers. While many blame Hitler for the Holocaust, those who blindly followed the fascist are also to blame for the six million executions. The doc shows a propaganda film from the Warsaw Ghetto. Even though the Nazis were never able to complete their project, the movie painfully reveals how easily our beliefs can be manipulated.

No End In Sight

With great power comes the great ability to stab holes into the world. If you don’t believe us, remember George W. Bush’s reign and the resulting Iraq War. In No End In Sight, we look back at the two-year period after the American invasion of Iraq. Bush’s overarching command didn’t mean he was prepared to lead us into a war. It is more important than ever to understand just how powerful and how potentially detrimental the U.S. presidency can be.

Growing Up Coy

Pink versus blue, Barbie versus Hot Wheels, and so many more gender binaries are taught to us from the moment we are born. They’re so deeply ingrained that it may be hard to truly understand the fight for transgender rights from the outside. See the fight through the eyes of a Colorado family, fighting for their 6-year-old transgender daughter’s civil rights.
