Tinashe’s Taco Tuesday

WORDS + PHOTOS BY: BJ PANDA BEAR

In LA, it’s not unheard of to find yourself sat next to someone absurdly famous at dinner – it comes with the territory, alongside gorgeous, struggling actors serving your overpriced entrée. Having someone famous actually make you dinner, however, is a rarity – especially if said person is the absurdly talented Tinashe.

The musician and dancer has been causing quite a stir by hosting epic taco Tuesday parties at her Hollywood Hills home. With an open door policy, the party welcomes a diverse array of creatives, cool kids, and industry types. Though it starts in relatively tranquility, with Tinashe in the kitchen cooking and pouring margaritas, the night builds into dancing around the living room and inevitable jacuzzi moments. Beyond a dinner party, it’s where ideas are exchanged, connections are made and perhaps most importantly, tacos are eaten.

Below, Tinashe finds time to answer our questions in the midst of making lemon buttered shrimp and frying up corn shells.

Can you tell us how you came up with this Taco Tuesday party concept?

I think I wanted an excuse to throw a party, and I think it’s cool to have that personal touch, so I definitely wanted to cook. Thank you! [She gleefully shouts to a friend as they pass her a strawberry margarita]. Tacos are one of my favorite things to cook. I was like, you know what about instead of having a traditional dinner party, I’m going to cook for people and have people come over to my house that way.

Have the the people who come through helped to inspire the path of your music?

Yes! I think I’ve had so many different types of people. It’s like so many different flavors, really what LA is about. All the different sides of the different characters you meet. That is definitely inspirational to me. LA and West Coast culture, the people and the array of things that you come across is one of my biggest inspirations in music always.

How do you think sharing music and sharing food are similar?

Yes, I think it’s something that brings people together without anyone necessarily having to use any dialogue. It’s just an excuse to bring people together, and everyone can understand food and everyone can understand music.

Your parties have been gaining a rep for curating some of the coolest kids. What is the funniest story you’ve had happen?

Yasss! Oh gosh I think it’s just all the people that showed up. So many people have stopped by and surprised me, all my different friends, from Diplo to Mark Ronson. It just has been so fun to see who is going to show up each time, also to have everyone just eat the food and see it bring them all together. I’ve never been a party thrower in life so this is a new thing for me, it’s really fun!

Do you have any plans to expand this evening?

Who knows?! I mean it’s been a success so far, so this is what I plan on doing for the summer and we’ll see what happens.
